In 1978, Antoine QUIOT bought a viticulture domaine in
Chateauneuf-du-Pape; his song Jean-Baptiste put in a bid
for an 24th Prairial year 11 (12th june 1795), the ruins of a
feudal chateau, la tour de L'hers and established his home
there by removing the ancient fortifications. Around this
pennant, their descendants, generation after generation,
have developed their domaines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and
Cotes du Ventoux.

After having waged wars throughout Europe,
Andre-Joseph HOUCHART settled in Aix-en-Provence in
1788. his son Ferdinand-Victor, page to the Princess
Pauline Borghese, sister of Napoleon 1, acuquired
agricultural land and founded a viticultural domaine, that
his family developed, notably at the foot of Mont Sainte
Victoire in Cotes de Provence.

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape

At one time there existed close to Chateauneuf-Du-Pape, a Lazaret (a hospice run by religious Lazarists who cared for old, destitute and sick people). Its role was particularly important at the time of the plague of 1720, when a third of the village's population perished.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the QUIOT family bought these old buildings, and built up a proper domaine buy linking up parcels of land owned on the commune.

The domaine, built up over three centuries, by marriage, purchase, distribution is spread out over the whole of the appelation and is called <<Domaine du Vieux Lazaret>> since 1915.

Cotes Du Ventoux

The land, a true patchwork of sand, clay and gravel, suits Grenache and Syrah (35%) vines perfectly. The direction of the selection of grape varieties for this domaine points strongly towards Syrah, perfectly adapted to this terroir. The wines are vinified in our cellars at Chateauneuf-du-Pape which allows the use of the Domaine du Vieux Lazaret name for these wines.
